Molecular phylogenetics is the study of evolutionary relationships among organisms or genes by using molecular data such as DNA, protein sequences (or other molecular markers) and statistical techniques. This has become one of the areas of molecular evolution that have generated much interest.

The main purpose of this workshop is to provide researchers with basic concepts and understanding of the principles and application of tools in phylogenetic reconstruction, especially molecular systematics.

The lectures will introduce the phylogenetic concepts, explain how to reconstruct a phylogenetic tree from molecular data, and discuss theoretical problems associated with molecular phylogenetic reconstruction.

The practical sessions will include:

  1. Acquisition of nucleotide sequences information from GenBank
  2. Sequence alignment and building data sets
  3. Data entry sequence information into the computer program PAUP
  4. Finding parsimonious phylogenies using MP, ML, NJ & Bayesian inference.

All participants who want to join the workshop are encouraged to write a proposal describing their research, and how molecular phylogenetics relates to their research. The best Asian student proposal will be awarded a scholarship to attend the workshop.
